Savourydiary | " Lets eat at Tang Tea House."

Hi All!

It has been such a long time.

As currently I'm working in the east, my most frequent visit will be Tang Tea house at Changi Village.

Of course, the number 1 go to dish or meal will be Steamed Chicken Rice with eggs.

Do ask for extra black sauce that is poured on the chicken.

it's so yummy! its sweet and salty and taste nice eaten with their amazing chicken rice chilli.

the chicken rice is fragrant, nicely cooked and seasoned. glazed with oil. so the rice is shiny.
you just know its a nice plate of chicken rice.

just a perfect plate of chicken rice to me!

i love chicken innard but their serving is too much for me to eat all on my own.

my favourite dessert have got to be this Mango Sago!
it taste like mango smoothie, topped with fresh mango which is a sweet! and sago.
simple yet sooooooo amazing!

headed over to Jalan Kayu outlet and was sooooooooooooo DISAPPOINTED for their Mango Sago because it is not the same!

mind you, i added ice cream and it cost almost SGD10.00.

$10.00 worth of disappointment.

HAHAHHAHA

Tang Tea at Changi Village was having or are they still having this promo... hmmmm...

Asam Fish Head or Curry Fish Head at only SGD15.80 ?
oh wait, or is it SGD16.80 ?

well, it doesn't matter.

its less than 20 bucks ok ?

and i chose the asam fish!

and NOPE! not one bit of disappointment!

can't really say it taste like our Asam Pedas because of course this is not Asam Pedas.
it taste a little bit like the spicier, sweeter.... than Sweet and sour ?

big serving for 2 or 3. worth it right ?

i was quite shocked when they served the fish head because it was that big.

only to realise, its only half the fish head ok guys.

so dont worry, surely you guys can finish it too!

the asam fish is served with mixed veges of what i could remember is brinjal , pineapple... i think there is some lady fingers.. but... oh well...

what should i eat today ?

hmmmmmm.

Savourydiary | " Lets eat at Commonground."

The other day, my friend decided to celebrate my birthday over at Blue Jasmine. Heard it was good. They are serving Thai Buffet! Can you imagine?! Free Flow of tom yum goodness? Free Flow of  Mango Sticky Rice?!

I know right! Can you already smell the lemon grass and lime leaves? I sure can.

Was slightly dissapointed to know it we were late to call in for booking and it was fully booked. So we decided to brain storm. We wanted to go for The Landmark buffet and then we realised, Ramadan yer nak, confirm tak makan banyak. Jangan nak waste current. So we planned on having ala carte.

Upon searching and googling, we realise Tampiness Hub is the best choice, because one of us is ending work at 6.30pm at Tampiness and we saw lots of Halal varieties. I have decided on having Saap Saap Thai. Well, an alternative to Blue Jasmine i supposed.

But as soon as I reached, i searched for Saap Saap Thai, and i was Saap Saap dissapointed. yet again! As the it was filled packed and the que was long. Was it a day for Tom Yum guys? Or is it nice? Please share! :)

Lucky for us, we are not those fussy eaters whereby as soon as the call for prayers are heard we need to eat. We just had some drinks to batalkan puase. Yer laa, kalau dah jumpe sesame melayu kan, confirm ade yang lambat. heee.

So we hang around outside starbucks while waiting for the rest and one of my friend said, " Lets eat at common ground. "

You know, me being very melayu. I ingat common ground tuh macam common area. macam common ground. kirekan macam, kawan i ni nak beli makan pasar malam sikit sane sikit itu jadi banyak beh ramai-ramai duduk kat lantai, makan. you know? Kate melayu mah, mesti lek lantai.

Sekali, she walked pass starbucks and started queing. Im like, HOLD UP! Why are you here for? only to realise, commonground bukan tempat lepak melayu la guys.

It is a nicely set bistro for you to dine in. Melayu boleh makan, it is HALAL.

What will catch my attention is, anything with runny egg yolk. Like half boiled eggs, or eggs benedicts. So their brunch set menu was the one that really really got me salivating only to be dissapointed again that it is not served full day.

Anyway,

BLACK PEPPER BEEF TENDERLOIN

Ordered Black Pepper Beef Tenderloin. Medium Rare and was not dissapointed.
This reminds me of Tony Romas beef. It is tender, easy to cut through not hard for you to chew and the black pepper sauce is thick and spicy just like how I like it.

I give this 4/5 stars.

BREADED FRIED STEAK WITH CABONARA

One of my girl's partner actually bought this, so I can't do a taste test for you.
But what i can say is, he ate it with the only complain of ," wah so small ah?"

Yeah, the pictures on the menu were bigger. So dont be deceived.

LINGUINE WITH POACHED EGGS

This is of course by yours trully. hehe. I ordered this because of the poached eggs.  This is creamy linguine with turkey ham and bacon. Nothing fancy. Nothing WOW. But it is edible.

3/5?

RIBEYE STEAK

Beef Brisket Fussili

I think this is my personal favourite out of all the dish I have tasted. You can really taste the beef flavour and the beef is sooooo tender, it is almost melting in your mouth. This is 2 thumbs up for me.

4.5/5

I will certainly go to commonground again to try their brunch menu.
And will keep you guys updated.

Meanwhile, do give commonground a try and lets see if we have the common grounds? HEH.

Savourydiary | Halal Oyster Fried Eggs

Hi Savouries!

Today, I will be sharing with you a recipe that is well liked by us locals. This is not malay food okay? This is Chinese food.

In Singapore, most of the oyster fried eggs are sold by Chinese which means, it is not halal. So today, I will share with you Halal oyster fried egg recipe. So you can cook it at the own comfort of your house. hehe.

Everytime I walked pass their stall, I will salivate (air liur meleleh babe). The aroma is enough to make you hungry. Batal tak puasa kite kalau tertelan air liur pasal sedap sangat bau nyer. hehehe.

Don't you feel the same way as me? Why do Chinese food always always smells so nice and tempting!

I have always looked out for halal Chinese stalls that sells oyster fried eggs but I will always go back to Northpoint basement, (Local Delights if I am not mistaken) for their oyster fried eggs.

What I can say about Northpoint's oyster fried egg is that. The taste is complete. The flour parts are made crispy on the side with plenty of eggs and the chilli is thick, sour and sweet which is nicely paired with the oysters. ( Yknw how you eat fresh oyster with tabasco or lemons, its for that soury taste. )

I have tried other stalls that sells oyster fried eggs too. Its either, there is too much flour, tasteless, or the chilli is simply too watery and too sour. Not to my liking.

But well, what do I know about oyster fried eggs since I have never tried the authentic ones ( with rice wine, lard and whatnot ). If there is any Chinese readers here who could enlightened me by describing the taste of the authentic fried oyster, do inform me ok?

INGREDIENTS

2 tbs cornflour
2 tbs rice flour
8 tbs water
1 tbs cooking oil
a bit of of white pepper

1 tbs light soy sauce
3 to 4 eggs
10 oysters
spring onions for garnish

What to do?

Mix corn flour, rice flour, oil , water and pepper in a bowl.
Heat a non stick pan with abit of cooking oil.
Once it is heated, pour in the flour mixture portion by portion and cook it till its crispy.
Pour in the eggs and let it cook. Just like how you fry an omelette.
Pour in the soy sauce for flavour.
And let the mixture turns golden.
Once done, make a hole in the centre and put in your oysters.
A drizzle of light soy sauce or a pinch of salt.
Mix all together and it is ready!

Cut in small pieces of spring onions to enhance its taste!

For the chilli, I'm unsure how to get the texture and taste just like the Northpoint one. But what I did was,

I blend some red chilli with vinegar, sugar and water. Which I then, cooked it on medium heat. Not so fantastic, but if you are not those picky ones, even eating with chilli sauce is ok. hahahahah!

Do share with me a nicer recipe for oyster fried egg ok?

Savourydiary | Headed to Woodlands Bazaar

Hello Savouries!

Today we headed over again to Woodland Bazaar in the afternoon to check out the stalls.
The other day, we headed there in the evening at about 9ish  and most of the stalls are close except for the hipsters drinks. foods and burger ramly stalls.

Ever since I've tasted burger ramly in Malaysia, I dah tak pandang burger ramly Singapore.
Unless there is something similar, do update me okay?
I will go and buy and give it a try myself.

I headed there in search for traditional malay kuih and to give it a try and see if its to my liking.
Because, seriously. IT IS SO HARD TO GET KUIH MELAYU YANG SEDAP.

I have tried kuih jongkong, which was given by a neighbor past Ramadan. It was so nice!
I ended up trying 2 to 3 stalls at geylang bazaar only to be dissapointed.

Either it has already gone bad ( pasal masak tak betul ) or the kuih and sugar syrup has already diffused together.
Which its not suppose to be that way.

So let me share my opinion on what we bought.

Headed to woodland bazaar just for this!
KUIH MELAYU!

Walked around the bazaar to look see which stall do I buy from.
And this stall caught my attention.
They have wide range of kuih for you to choose.
From donuts, to kuih keria, to kuih jong kong, to badak berendam.
You name it, they have it. Yeah, that kinda stall.

The kuih that I bought today is at 4 pieces for $2.00.
So you can choose, from kuih jongkong, kuih lapis, pulut bakar and kuih abuk-abuk.

Yeah, the picture did not lie. There are six pieces.
I remembered ordering 2 kuih jong kong and 2 pulut bakar.
Only to realise when i reached home that the makcik, gave me 1 abuk-abuk and 1 kuih koci pulut hitam.

Rezeki bulan Ramadan. Semoga gerai makcik dimurahkan rezeki. Amin.

So, I decided to try the pulut bakar first though I badly am craving for kuih jong kong actually.

Pulut bakar is basically glutinous rice with serunding. That is cooked in banana leave for its fragrant taste. I unwrapped it and saw how much serunding was packed together with the pulut. Im impressed.Serunding tak lokek and just nice for the pulut and serunding to be filled in your mouth at every bite. Delicious. In terms of taste, i give it 4.5/5! Because the serunding has so much flavours and ketumbar jintan too. This is the kind of pulut bakar yang you makan, you tak hampa babe.

What you expect from bazaar food right? For bazaar food, it is worth the 4.5 ratings to me. Cheap and good I must say.

So this got my expectations up high but I am telling you to be dissapointed.

Nenek opened the kuih abok-abok to only find abok. HAHAHAHAHAHHA.
pun intended.
No, seriously, we are finding for the gula melaka. Where is it? Tertinggal dekat melaka ke makcik?
So, that aside, since its free. It's ok.

I started to open my kuih jong kong, smell it to see whether it is still edible or not.
yknow la sometimes kuih kuih that have coconut will spoil quite fast. And I don't blame the seller.
Because guys, really. Reality check, god knows how early they woke up to prepare us this food.

But am still dissapointed because the banana leave is filled with only flour. Where is the gula melaka? Where?

With that, in my own conclusion, either the gula melaka, makcik tertinggal at melaka or, they ran out of gula melaka or... i wont say the other word.

But trust me, their kuih keria and donut is so tempting. The sugar crystals that formed, really made me want to grabbed like $2.00 worth but ini semuanya NAFSU ya guys.

Overall, I would say, this stall is not overall good. Like every food you choose is nice. But you know, there is this kind of mindset. kalau satu makanan sedap, means all sedap. But I wonder what happened to this stall. Maybe there are few makciks that do the cookings, so different people different style I guess.

I will come back for the pulut bakar and perhaps try the other kuihs. Especially their kuih keria. Shall I update you then Savouries?

This stall will be 3/5 for now. Till the next try of kuihs make a second round of verdict yes?

Next of, I tried the Nasi Bukhari. It is pronounced as Book-qo-ri. Because at first I confidently exclaimed i wanted to get the "NASI Book-kari" and my cousin was like, this is huruf qo bukan ka. heh. k, whatever.

I walked around the stall for like 3-4 times contemplating whether the 4 of us could finish this set.
But I gave in because I saw the abang open the periuk and the daging is saying hello baby to me.
So I enquired the price for nasi bukhari daging and handed over my cash. YOU WON!

Nasi Bukhari is at $6.50 and on normal days, I would say its abit pricey but for today, why I bought it is because of its not melampau portion just nice to eat for iftar.

Verdict?
Well, I'm really not sure. I will be very biased. Because I dont know how nasi bukhari should taste like. The first time i tasted nasi bukhari is home cooked by this one makcik. It is the best and very delicious! sedap till i can tambah2. Because its not muak and the flavours are just nice.

But this is my second time buying nasi bukhari and both times, I'm not as impressed. Yer la, how can you compare home cooked food to stall food right?

But judging based on the taste, it is edible. There are enough rampah, flavour and ingredients in the rice itself. just that, certain part of the beef is abit hard. prefer it to be soft. case cocok sikit je dah hancur.

And I bough roti boyan. This is im not sure really from boyan or not. but it is well known in the malay food, so ok la. I put together as malay traditional kuih ok?

Basically roti boyan is mashed potatoes with onions, garlic, fried shallots and celery.
Some makcik do add in diced hard boiled eggs. But the original recipe, Im still uncertain if eggs are included.

Just like epok-epok,those curry puffs. you know, those add on with eggs. Its a nice feeling right to have eggs inside. its like opening a kinder joy. an extra ingredient. who wouldnt love it right?

roti boyan is best paired with sambal ikan bilis. SYIOK!

The best roti boyan is from my aunt or from Tampiness  Interchange when it is freshly fried. Do ask for extra chilli. It is superb! Sedap!

So this particular roti boyan is at $2.50. it is pricey for the size compared to the Tampiness interchange ones.

The size is a little smaller than the piring you alas cawan teh gitu.
But look at it!
The foldings are so good!
This is what caught my attention.
It looks compact and well made!

But,nooooooooooooooooooope.
I rase the makcik forget to put salt. It is tasteless.
Im so dissapointed.

And so, i cecah la sambal. HAISH la guys.
Sambal rase macam air guys.

It turned me off, so.... I wont be going this shop again. ni macam 0.5/5.
I sedih!

So today, nenek cooked beef wanton soup.
Beef, potatoes, fishballs and hand made wanton.

I think this soup is nicely eaten with noodles. like kway teow and chilli kicap! PEEEERGGGGGHHHH! confirm confirm!

She made easy wantons today.
Perhaps, I shall share with you the playcheat recipe my nenek used to make this.
It is really easy and nice!

And I am biased la, because air tangan nenek mane yang tak sedap kan? hehe.

This is the first time nenek cooked cekodok ayam.
Selalu cekodok ikan bilis. Cucur manis.
This is cekodok ayam!

I will share the recipe in a seperate post ok?
Cekodok mane laa tak sedap?
The only thing is, though it is easy to make. most of the time, I is malas nak goreng. hehehehe.

Nenek also decided to make mango sticky rice for dessert today.
This, kalau korang malas nak masak, I pon tak tahu ape nak cakap.
You need glutinious rice. sugar syrup, coconut milk and mango.

Served cold. Sedap!

Just look at the juicy sweet mangoes! adui! Pakkal la, semput, kalau tak, dah makan tambah tambah dah.

Anddddddddd highlight of the night is burger Rizal!
It is basically home made burger ramly by my younger cousin who came from malaysia.

But as you know, burger ramly in singapore cant be trusted.
sometimes, there are no seasoning.
And at worse times, the patty arent even cooked.
The only reason i kept buying burger ramly in singapore is because i keep on hoping if it is not as good as the ones i have tasted in malaysia, at least it is half as good.

but no, im always always dissapointed.

here in singapore, the patties are half cooked and left aside and " reheat " when we order.
reheat! which means the centre of the patty is still not cooked because they dont also slice the patty in half. burger ramly is not meant to be eaten medium done eh guyss. so please.

He cooked with so much love and attention!
Basically, well seasoned patties, cheese and chilli sauce.
but trust me it is nicer than those at the bazaar.

Will share with you the " secret " techniques of cooking the patties in another post.
for now, aren't you drooling with me savouries?

Aren't this good?!

Savourydiary | Recipe Roti Kirai & Chicken Curry

Hi Savouries!

Today I will be sharing with you Roti Kirai, one of Malay traditional food, which is best paired with curry. For today, I will be sharing with you Chicken Curry recipe which I cooked with carrots and potatoes. My chicken curry recipe came about when accidents happen in the kitchen or when my stocks are running quite low.

But in-syaa-allah(if gods willing), it will taste nice and to your liking as well!

My roti kirai recipe will in-syaa-allah be easy for you to follow and also, stay soft till your sahur.

So, lets go!
Recipes are below.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups of self raising flour or plain flour
  • 3 cups of coconut milk with water ( 1 box of coconut milk and additional cups is water )
  • 3 tbp of cooking oil ( this will make the kirai process smoother hence easier for us )
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 egg
  • A bit of yellow food coloring ( I used egg yolk flavor) or turmeric powder
WHAT TO DO

  • Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl
  • Blend the mixture and pour through a sieve to remove any lumpy substance so that your kirai equipment will not be stuck
  • Heat your pan on medium heat and coat a thin layer of butter or cooking oil
  • Start kirai-ing
  • Once the mixture starts to change color, it is cook
  • Remove and start folding or rolling them to your liking!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Red Onion
  • 5 clove Garlic
  • Ginger (about the size of your pinky finger)
  • 5 tbs of Fish Curry Powder
  • 2 Chicken Cube
  • 2 Cinnamon Stick
  • 3 Star Anise
  • 1 box of coconut milk
  • 1 whole Chicken
  • 2 potatoes
  • 1 carrot
WHAT TO DO
  1. Firstly, cut your chicken into smaller pieces. Trim all those chicken fats.
  2. Soak them in salt and tamarind (be generous). This will remove all those slime and sticky-ness from the chicken. (Macam cuci ayam dengan sabun yer. )
  3. Heat pan with about 5tbp of cooking oil.
  4. Finely slice onions, garlic and ginger.
  5. Saute the sliced ingredients till soften
  6. Add on cinnamon stick and star anise till fragrant
  7. Pour in fish curry powder ( yes, i use fish curry powder by accident. also, when i realized, i searched for chicken curry powder only to realize i ran out of stocks. so its okay because then you don't have to add on tamarind juice. )
  8. Once its fried and fragrant ( bahan-bahan dah garing ye tuan tuan dan puan puan)
  9. (rinse your chicken with water removing the salt and tamarind substance)
  10. Put in your chicken and chicken stocks.Mix and let it simmer for a while. (Let the chicken cooked a little - macam suku masak)
  11. Add in your pieces of potatoes and carrots (nak besar ke kecil ke, terpulang. )
  12. Add on coconut milk and water (water to should be level with your ingredients) and let it boil till chicken is fully cooked and potatoes and carrots are soft
  13. Food is READY!

Often, Roti Kirai is served with any curry dish be it, Chicken Curry or Beef Curry.
Minced, diced, chunks.

Also, mak mak dan nenek nenek will serve this dish with this green salad with hard boiled egg.

All three (Roti kirai, curry and salad) pairs well together.

What I did?

I took pieces of lettuce, cut hard boiled eggs into slices and pour chilli and tomato sauce.

This is so good! Salads are meant to be easy, yes? But, I am certain and sure mak mak and nenek nenek do have recipe for this salad sauce. But,whatever feeds the hungry tummy yes?

This, I could say is as good. hehe.

Of course, there's not much rule to cooking as long as it is nice to the one eating it. As the saying goes, you can't please everybody. so.... please yourself. (kalau sedap dan kene kat tekak, makan je ok?)

Also, this salad is so versatile. You can also add on cucumber or tomatoes or whatever that suits your liking.

Do try and keep me updated Savouries.
Do you like it?
Is it easy?
Or do you need a simpler recipe?
Send me photos of your food!
I am excited to hear from you.
